What Surprises Await in 28 Years Later’s Shocking Ending?

Unraveling the End of 28 Years Later and its Exciting Sequel

The cinematic universe is buzzing with excitement as Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later hits theaters. But for many viewers, the most jaw-dropping moment might just be its unexpected ending. Spike, a key character who navigates the eerie landscape of this post-apocalyptic world, encounters Sir Lord Jimmy Crystal and his notorious Jimmies cult. This cliffhanger sets the stage for the highly anticipated sequel, 28 Years LateThe Bone Temple, slated for release next year.

What makes this sequel even more remarkable is that it was filmed simultaneously with the first installment. Fans can expect a seamless continuity in storytelling, with masterful writing by Alex Garland. However, directing duties have transitioned to Nia DaCosta, who promises a fresh perspective on this gripping saga. In a recent Q&A with EMPIRE, DaCosta teased that audiences should gear up for substantial screen time from Jack O’Connell as Sir Lord Jimmy Crystal, alongside iconic performances from Ralph Fiennes as Dr. Ian Kelson and Chi Lewis-Parry as Alpha. And of course, expect plenty of the Jimmies, whose intrigue was built up brilliantly in the first film.

The Legacy of Cillian Murphy

In an alluring twist, Boyle has confirmed that Cillian Murphy’s Jim, last seen in 28 Days Later, will make a brief appearance at the close of The Bone Temple. This cameo is set to transition into a more prominent role in 28 Years Later 3, where the entire narrative will revolve around him. Boyle expressed enthusiasm for the scene, stating, “I have seen this bit of The Bone Temple where he’s reintroduced and it is excellent.” This methodical setup suggests a grand arc is being mapped out, though the script for the third film remains unwritten.

When asked about Naomie Harris reprising her role from 28 Days Later, Boyle indicated that it’s currently just Cillian in the spotlight. As for directing the finale of this trilogy, Boyle is at the helm, but caution remains. The film hasn’t yet been green-lit, with Sony cautiously eyeing box office performance to determine the budget for the concluding chapter.

28 Years LateThe Bone Temple is set to hit cinemas on January 16, 2026, and the anticipation surrounding it has film buffs on the edge of their seats.
