Remembering George Wendt’s Legacy and Kindness

In a somber moment for television fans, the beloved six-time Emmy-nominated star of Cheers, George Wendt, passed away on May 20 at the age of 76. A reminder of his enduring legacy, many may not realize that he has a celebrated nephew in Jason Sudeikis, the Emmy-winner from Ted Lasso. Sudeikis’ emotional journey back to his roots stirred nostalgia and reflection this past weekend.

Returning to Kansas City, Missouri, where he spent much of his youth just a stone’s throw from his hometown of Overland Park, Kansas, Sudeikis took on the role of host for the Big Slick fundraising event benefiting Children’s Mercy Hospital. During a heartfelt press conference, he was asked about Wendt’s passing. The moment took a poignant turn as Sudeikis shared his thoughts on his uncle, revealing that the quintessential Norm Peterson embodied the same kindness and joy offscreen as he did on.

“With regard to my Uncle George,” Sudeikis began, “there’s that old saying, ‘Don’t meet your heroes.’ But he’s not one of those people. He was as fun and warm as any character he played on television.” Drawing from personal anecdotes, he spoke about how Wendt served as both a mentor and an inspiration. “He blazed a trail, being from the Midwest, and taught me that acting was a real career. It’s where you can meet the love of your life, like his wife, who he called his ‘permanent girlfriend,’ Bernadette.”

George Wendt is survived by his wife of 47 years, Bernadette Birkett, their three children—Hilary, Joe, and Daniel—along with stepsons Joshua and Andrew. Not to be forgotten, Sudeikis’ mother Kathy, Wendt’s younger sister, shares in the family’s profound loss.

Memories Shared by Friends and Co-Stars

Sudeikis continued to reflect on Wendt’s deep connections to family and his Midwest roots. “He always stayed in touch with Chicago, where he hailed from. He often reminisced about attending Rockhurst College and the memorable times spent at Mike’s bar, a place with many stories behind it.”

His fellow Cheers co-stars echoed similar sentiments, expressing sorrow over Wendt’s loss. Ted Danson stated, “I am devastated to hear that Georgie is no longer with us. All my love goes to Bernadette and the children. It’ll take a long time to get used to this.”

Meanwhile, Rhea Perlman described Wendt as the “sweetest, kindest man” she had ever known. “As Carla, I often stood next to him. Norm always took the same seat at the bar, making it easy for me to grab him and put on a show of beating him up, which he loved.” Her words encapsulated what many felt—George was a joy to know and an irreplaceable treasure in the world of comedy.

John Ratzenberger, Wendt’s partner in crime on Cheers, revealed his heartbreak. “For eleven years, we shared a stage, laughter, and one of television’s most beloved friendships.” Ratzenberger emphasized Wendt’s brilliance, stating that his gift for comedy was evident both on and off the screen, coupled with loyalty to those close to him.

The testimonies from friends and family alike resonate deeply, showcasing not just a talented actor, but a warm, unforgettable human being. George Wendt will indeed be missed, with his laughter echoing not only within the walls of Cheers but in the hearts of all who knew him.
