Southwest Airlines Expands Global Reach with New Partnership

Southwest Airlines just took a bold leap into the future, announcing a major partnership that will enhance its reach on a global level. This thrilling news comes just days after the airline made waves with its new baggage policy.

On June 2, Southwest revealed its upcoming collaboration with China Airlines Group, a renowned carrier based in Taiwan. This interline partnership is set to launch in early 2026, with tickets expected to go on sale later this year. The announcement was made at the International Air Transport Association’s 2025 Annual General Meeting held in India, marking a significant milestone as Southwest steps into the trans-Pacific market for the first time.

“ We’re on a journey to bring more choices to our customers,” declared Andrew Watterson, Chief Operating Officer at Southwest Airlines. This new synergy with China Airlines promises to create seamless travel experiences across the Southwest network, aligning with the airline’s Vision and Purpose of connecting people to crucial moments in their lives.

This partnership follows closely on the heels of Southwest’s recent collaboration with Icelandair, enabling dual-carrier itineraries that connect travelers from the U.S. to Europe via major hubs like Baltimore/Washington, Denver, and Nashville. Changes on the Horizon

Not to be overlooked, on May 28, the airline introduced a revised baggage policy that applies to reservations booked or modified after that date. Under this new structure, checked baggage fees now apply, with Rapid Rewards A-List Preferred Members and Business Select customers enjoying the perk of two complimentary checked bags. A-List Members and select customers will receive one free checked bag, while Rapid Rewards Credit Cardmembers can also enjoy a credit for their first checked bag. Additional baggage will incur fees of $35 for the first bag and $45 for the second.
