Ethiopia rejects Washington’s allegations of ethnic cleansing in Tigray

The Ethiopian State Department declined in a statement: The US Secretary of State’s open allegations of ethnic cleansing in the Tigray region were “a completely unfounded false rule” against the Ethiopian government.

“The Ethiopian government attaches particular importance to its long-term and strategic relationship with the United States,” the Ethiopian statement said.

“Addis Ababa is committed to working closely with the current US administration to strengthen and improve this important bilateral relationship over the coming years,” he added.

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken called on Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to accept an international investigation into allegations of atrocities in the Tigray region.

In a phone call to Abiy Ahmed, Blinken urged “the Ethiopian government to work with the international community to enable independent, international and credible investigations into reports of human rights violations and bring those behind them to justice”.

The State Department also said Blinken urged Abiy Ahmed to end hostilities in the northern Tigray region, noting that there were “credible reports of atrocities, violations and human rights violations”.

“The minister called on the Ethiopian government to take immediate concrete measures to protect the civilian population, including refugees, and to prevent further acts of violence,” she added in a statement.

Blinken stressed that in Tigray the United States “remains ready to help resolve the conflict”.

Tigray, with a population of around five million, is experiencing a war between the federal forces and the former ruling local party, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front.
