The European Union also reiterated the need to conclude the investigation into the explosion of the port of Beirut as soon as possible, provided it is impartial, credible, transparent and independent, and without any interference in legal procedures, so that those responsible for that disaster must be considered. responsible.

He stressed the responsibility of the Lebanese authorities to ensure the continuation of the investigation by ensuring all the financial and human resources necessary to achieve the desired result.

These developments came after the Tayouneh roundabout, located tens of meters from the Law Courts of the Lebanese capital, near the office of the forensic investigator Tariq Bitar, was transformed in a war camp, yesterday, Thursday, where he witnessed heavy gunfire and heavy bullets and the spread of snipers on the roofs of buildings, despite the presence of units The army and its implementation quickly spread to the region, awakening the specter of civil war that lasted from (1975-1990).

As for this spark of violence, it began after elements loyal to Hezbollah and the Amal Movement (led by the President of Parliament Nabih Berri) gathered in front of the Palace of Justice to protest against the judicial investigator and demand his dismissal.

Campaign against the investigating judge

In recent weeks, Hezbollah and its ally, the Amal Movement, have been a spearhead in the campaign against the investigator in the case of the port explosion, especially after his complaint against former Prime Minister Hassan Diab and his request to prosecute former MPs and ministers, including Ministers Ali Hassan Khalil and Ghazi Zuaiter, who belong to Amal, as well as security officials who rotate in the party’s orbit.


Interestingly, many opposition politicians and Lebanese affairs observers fear that political pressure will lead to the sacking of Bitar, similar to his predecessor Fadi Sawan, who was removed last February after his accusations against political officials.

Hezbollah: isolate bitar first

Especially that Hezbollah and Amal threatened to withdraw from the government, thus paralyzing his work, and stipulated that no ministerial session would be held unless it was devoted to discussing the investigation into the explosion that killed some 215 people and he has injuries another 6,500.


The information also indicated that what is known as the “Shia duo” will not back down from his request to remove the judge, who in turn is still adhering to the investigation path, which he initiated months ago without hesitation, despite the pressures to which he was subjected. subject to.

It is interesting to note that in the past few hours rumors have circulated that Bitar has visited the presidential palace in Baabda to inform the President of the Republic, Michel Aoun, of his desire to resign from the investigation, but the Media Office of the Presidency denied today, Friday , the validity of the question.
