European ministerial meeting to discuss “Russian gas” and sanctions

EU energy ministers meet on Monday to discuss Russia’s decision to cut gas supplies to Bulgaria and Poland and to discuss new sanctions planned for Moscow’s war on Ukraine.

The 27-nation bloc imposed five round sanctions on Russian officials, oligarchs, banks, corporations and other organizations since Russian forces invaded Ukraine in February. The European Commission is working on a sixth round of measures that could include oil restrictions, but Russia-dependent countries like Hungary and Slovakia are concerned about taking rigorous action.

The European Commission could announce proposals for new sanctions later this week. Member States must accept these procedures; This is a process that can take several days.

Energy ministers will also consider measures to be taken if Russia increases the pressure by cutting off gas supplies to other countries.
