European Union Investigates Apple’s Termination of Epic Games’ iOS Developer Account Under DMA Regulations
The European Union is currently investigating Apple’s decision to revoke Epic Games’ iOS developer account. This move came after Apple canceled a developer account in Sweden that Epic had recently obtained to launch Fortnite and the Epic Games Store on Apple devices in Europe.
The European Commission spokesperson mentioned that they have asked Apple for more information under the Digital Markets Act (DMA), a new EU regulation created to prevent dominant market players like Apple from suppressing competition.
In a recent update, Apple has reversed its decision and reinstated Epic’s developer account. Epic Games expressed their gratitude to the European Commission for enforcing the Digital Markets Act and holding gatekeepers accountable. They are now moving forward with their plans to launch the Epic Games Store and bring Fortnite back to iOS in Europe.
Epic Games criticized Apple for violating the DMA and hindering competition on iOS devices. They claimed that Apple’s actions show a lack of intention to allow true competition and are setting a negative example for other developers.
On the other hand, Apple defended its decision by stating that it was within their rights to terminate the developer account based on court rulings from their ongoing antitrust legal battle with Epic. They referred to Epic’s breach of contractual obligations as the reason for their actions.
