Exploring the Possibility of Shortening the Year by One Second Through Increasing the Earth’s Rotation Speed

Vitaly Palchikov, Senior Researcher at the Department of Advanced Studies and Measurements of Time and Frequency at the Research Institute for Physical, Technical and Radio Measurements, said that the acceleration of the Earth’s rotation will shorten the year by one second.

And a Russian physicist points out in a statement to the Russkiye Novosti news agency that due to an anomalous increase in the speed of the Earth’s rotation, the length of the year in a few years will become shorter by one second in 2028.

And the world adds that the increase in the speed of the Earth’s rotation in 2022 resulted in June 29 being the shortest day in history. Before that, in the 1970s, 37 seconds were added due to the slowing of the Earth’s rotation.

According to him, experts do not currently have a comprehensive interpretation of this issue.

He says: “The hypothesis related to the change in the moment of inertia of the nucleus is one of the possible hypotheses to explain the effects of accelerating the speed of the Earth’s rotation.”

The second hypothesis is related to the intensity of rain and snow: an anomalous increase in precipitation leads to an increase in the speed of the Earth’s rotation. As for evaporation, it slows down its rotation. But, according to him, these indicators do not compensate each other.
