FIFA rebels after racist abuse of England players

The International Football Association (FIFA) has affirmed its total rejection of the racist abuse suffered by English players during their country’s recent match against Hungary in Budapest in qualifying for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, after this incident required a strong stance from British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who called on FIFA to take a firm stand. .

The duo of Raheem Sterling and Jude Blingham were subjected to racist chants during the latest confrontation which ended with England’s 4-0 victory at Puskas Arena.

The Manchester City player scored the first goal of the match, but the racist abuse of the brown skinned players of the England national team tarnished the atmosphere of the match.

Firecrackers were also thrown into the stadium in a noisy and hostile atmosphere in the stands.

“It is absolutely unacceptable that the English players have been subjected to racist abuse in Hungary last night, ”Johnson wrote on his Twitter account.

“I urge the International Federation to take strict measures against officials in order to remove this outrageous behavior from this game once and for all,” he added.

Subsequently, FIFA released its first comment on the Budapest incident, saying: “First of all, FIFA completely rejects any kind of racism and violence and does not tolerate any such behavior in football.”

“The International Federation will take appropriate measures as soon as official reports on the Hungary-England match arrive,” he added.

And the European Union punished Hungary last July by playing three games behind closed doors, including one with a two-year ban, due to the “discriminatory behavior of its fans” during the 2020 European Cup.

However, the sanctions had no effect against England in World Cup qualifiers, in as it is a FIFA competition.

Disappointment – English players were also booed before the start of the match against Hungary after getting up in standing as a move against racism.

It is not the first time that the England national team, under the guidance of coach Gareth Southgate, has been the victim of these racist incidents, as happened against Montenegro and Bulgaria in the 2020 European Cup qualifiers.

In this regard, Southgate said: “These incidents happen again and again and everyone knows the values we have as a team, and this is absolutely unacceptable.”

He continued: “There have been reports of what happened to the European Union and let’s see what happens next. The players know very well that the world is changing. Even though some are still stuck in their thinking and prejudices, but they will eventually become extinct like the dinosaurs because the world advances in modernization. “

The FA stated in a note: “It is very disappointing to hear these reports of racist incidents against some England players.”

“We will ask FIFA to investigate the matter. We will continue to support the players and coaching staff in our collective determination to fight racism in all its forms, “the statement added.

English players such as Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka have previously been subjected to racist abuse online unprecedented after missing penalties in England’s European Cup final lost to Italy at Wembley last July.

In turn, England defender Harry Maguire said he didn’t notice the monkey songs being shot but he clearly heard the boos as the English players knelt down. in feet before the game starts.

“It was very disappointing to hear these cries when we got up in feet, but they have also happened in previous matches, “the Manchester United captain told the BBC.

“I am happy that all the players faced it with courage and did the same at the end of the game,” he added.
