Tension and division

Yesterday the Sudanese protesters continued the sit-in in front of the Republican Palace in the center of the capital, adhering to their fundamental request to dissolve the civil government.

At the same time, a counter-march was organized yesterday evening in the eastern part of Khartoum, to the sound of songs of “freedom, pace and justice ”and“ civilization chosen by the people ”, as reported by the AFP.

Interestingly, the Sudanese government on Monday asked protesters loyal to the military side and its supporters to stop the escalation. In a statement at the time, after an emergency session, the government demanded that all parties refrain from escalation and counter-escalation and that all place the highest interest of the Sudanese people.

This came after Hamdok recognized on Friday evening in a speech to the nation that there are “deep divisions between civilians and between civilians and military”, emphasizing that “the conflict is not between civilian and military, but rather between the civilian democratic transition camp and its adversaries”.

After the coup attempt last September, tensions have increased between the civilian and military components that make up the country’s transitional authority, which took over after the ouster of former president Omar al-Bashir.

The two sides also exchanged accusations of mismanagement of the country and exacerbation of the economic and housing crisis.
