First direct commercial flight between Tel Aviv and Doha takes off

On Sunday, the first direct commercial flight between Tel Aviv and Doha took off on the sidelines of prime World Cup soccer matches, according to an AFP photographer.

Cyprus Airways TUS Airways confirmed to France Press on Friday that it had obtained the via free from the Qatar Civil Aviation Authority to operate six direct flights from Tel Aviv to Doha and another six in the opposite direction. The flight departed from Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport on Sunday morning. Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Lior Hayat said “history was written” with “the first direct flight between Tel Aviv and Doha”.

Hayat reiterated his advice to Israelis to act wisely while they are in Qatar, underlining that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs “will work to ensure that fans behave in compliance with local traditions and laws to prevent any trouble”. For his part, Israeli football fan Hadar Segal, 35, described boarding the plane as “special and historic”.
