Five of the Fastest Half Centuries Of The IPL 2021

The IPL (Indian Premier League) is set to resume this September after close to five months of suspension. The decision to temporarily suspend the IPL was taken in May by the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) after four franchises reported a COVID breach in their bio-secure bubbles. To prevent further escalation of COVID and in the interests of safety, BCCI announced the suspension of the fourteenth edition of IPL.

However, after thorough consultations, BCCI announced the resumption of the league, albeit with some changes. The second phase of the IPL would be held in the UAE from mid-September. UAE is no stranger to the IPL as it was held there successfully in its entirety last year. Pakistan also held this year’s edition of their league in UAE.

Before the league’s hiatus, there were many thrilling plays but among the most captivating were those that yielded the fastest half-centuries in IPL 2021. Though the record for fastest fifty ever was not threatened, the fastest 50 in the IPL 2021 barely makes it in the top five of all time.

Kieron Pollard’s Fifty of 17 Balls

In the May 1, 2021 fixture where defending champions Mumbai Indians played the indomitable Chennai Super kings, Kieron was in spectacular form, amassing 87 runs in only 34 balls. The match held in Chennai had Mumbai Indians chasing a colossal 219 runs, but Kieron stepped up and inspired Mumbai Indians to claw back. This chase was the second-highest in IPL history, but Mumbai Indians were able to turn the tables and squeeze in a win. Kieron struck eight sixes and six fours during his massive runs haul. It took him just 17 balls to score the fastest half-century of IPL 2021.

Prithvi Shaw Fifty of 18 Balls

During the match between Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders held on April 29, 2021, Prithvi Shaw struck a whopping 82 runs off 41 balls to set the pace for Delhi Capitals’ cruise to victory against Kolkata Knight Riders. Prithvi has been outstanding as a top-order batter, evidenced by his impeccable showing at the Vijay Hazare Trophy tournament. He struck six fours from Kolkata Knight Riders fast bowler Shivam Mavi in the first six deliveries in the first over of the match. This must have instilled fear in the opposition as they were not much of a challenge after this cracking start.

Deepak Hooda Fifty off 20 Balls

Deepak Hooda started the season with a bang for the Punjab Kings, rattling off 64 runs from 28 balls during the game against Rajasthan Royals on April 2, 2021, in Mumbai. This score contributed to the 221 runs his team scored for the loss of six wickets at the 20 overs mark. Hooda blew the Rajasthan Royals’ spinners to smithereens with six sixes and four fours. His record of fifty in only 20 balls stood for a while until Prithvi Shaw decimated it later in the season.

Ambati Rayadu Fifty with 20 Balls

Chennai Super Kings’ Ambati Rayadu is tied with Deepak Hooda with a half-century off 29 balls. He played his blistering innings during Chennai Super Kings’ hard-fought game against Mumbai Indians, which they lost with the smallest margins. Chennai faltered after a good start and had only garnered 135 for the loss of four wickets when Ambati stepped up to bat at the 15th over. He hit an amazing seven sixes and four fours in the innings to boost Chennai Super kings to 219. However, Mumbai Indians doggedly chased their target and were able to inch past Chennai Super Kings at the last ball.

Andre Russell Hitting a Fifty off 21 Balls.

Kolkata Knight Riders all-rounder had a phenomenal start this season after struggling last season.

He galvanized the Kolkata Knight Riders rally against Chennai Super Kings to claim the fifth fastest fifty in IPL 2021. He teamed up well with teammate Dinesh Karthik. He played spectacular innings with 54 off only 22 balls when the team was stumbling at 31 for the loss of 5 wickets in a chase of 221. However, he was dismissed by Sam Curran, but despite a spirited performance from Kolkata knight Riders, they could not reach the target, losing by 18 runs.

With the resumption of the second phase of the IPL, it remains to be seen if there will be a change in the list of the fastest half-century of IPL 2021.
