the floods in China and Europe are still “another” body blow, blow ” for global supply chains, the CEO of a shipping firm told CNBC on Monday.
“A week rarely goes by past without something new, ” says Tim Huxley, CEO of Mandarin expedition.
Shipping has already saw huge disruptions this year. How you leave of the world rebounded from the pandemic, increased spending led to a deficit of containers, creating delays and driving up prices.
So in April, one of the world’s largest container ships wedged in the Suez Canal, blocking traffic for almost a week. The waterway is one of the busiest in the world, with about 12% of trade going through it.
In June, an increase of Cases of covid in Southern China caused more delays in ports in the region, again jacking up shipping prices.
Heavy rains and floods have devastated parts of Western Europe. Some of the most serious flood occurred most in Germany and Belgium. Set off of Switzerland, Luxembourg and the Netherlands were also affected.
“This will really disrupt the supply chain because the rail links have all been cut off,” Huxley told CNBC’s “Squawk Box Asia”.
He said it includes railways from the Czech Republic and Slovakia to German ports of Rotterdam and Hamburg, which were “seriously interrupted”.
“And so it will delay the movements of the load in And out”he said.” It will really shock the industry. “
Huxley pointed to Thyssenkrupp, noting that the German steelmaking giant could not go raw materials due to the flood.
“This will eventually have a hit on effect on industries such as the automotive industry, appliances and things like that, “he said.
S&P Global Platts reported, citing a letter to customers, Thyssenkrupp declared force greater on July 16. A force greater event it occurs when unforeseeable circumstances, such as natural disasters, prevent one party from the fulfillment of their contractual duties, absolving them from sanctions.
