Forget counting sheep! An innovation that makes your body fall asleep faster!

Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin have developed a unique pillow and mattress system that tricks your body into falling asleep faster by heating and cooling it down.

During the test, the researchers showed that the system helped participants fall asleep 58% faster than usual.

Unfortunately, it is not yet clear how much the system will cost and when it will become available, although researchers currently own a patent for the technology.

At night, our body temperature naturally drops in accordance with the 24-hour rhythm that tells us it’s time for bed.

“We make getting ready for bed easier by manipulating internal sensors sensitive to body temperature to briefly adjust the body’s thermostat so that the temperature appears higher than it really is.”

Based on this knowledge, the researchers set out to see if thermal stimulation could help people fall asleep.

And in 2019, the team conducted a study showing that taking a warm bath an hour or two before bed helps people fall asleep faster and better.

In this follow-up study, the researchers decided to develop a temperature-controlled mattress and heating pad to achieve a similar effect.

Two types of mattresses have been developed, one using water to regulate temperature and the other using air.

In his study, published in the Journal of Sleep Research, the researchers explained, “One model used circulating water to create and control two mattress temperature zones, and the other used airflow to create and control mattress temperature zones.”

The system for these two types of mattresses uses separate cooling and heating sources, which are regulated independently of each other.

The mattress cools the central areas of the body to 25°C (77°F) and warms the neck, arms and legs to 33°C (91°F).

This increases blood flow to dissipate body heat, tricking you into feeling sleepy.

To test the system, the researchers recruited 11 participants who were asked to go to bed two hours earlier than usual.

On some nights, six participants used an air mattress, five used a water-based mattress, and on other nights they used the main mattress.

The results showed that the temperature control system helped participants fall asleep 58% faster — with no significant difference between water and air mattresses.

Participants also reported better sleep quality with the regimen than without it.

The team owns the patent for mattress and pillow cooling technology and is committed to partnering with mattress manufacturers to market them.
