Former BBC boss Lord Birt has stated that Gary Lineker breached impartiality rules when he voiced his opinion on UK immigration policy while working as part of the BBC, and it was not “legitimate or right” for him to do so. Lineker was suspended for three days following his descent into the ongoing conflict, which affected other presenters such as Alex Scott who showed support for him by stepping down from her presenting slot for a weekend. He was later reinstated, however, Lord Birt remains adamant that Lineker breached BBC guidelines, and hopes that the corporation will recover its reputation for impartiality.
