Free technology for teachers: White Christmas probability card

My daughters are enthusiastic about the fact that Christmas is only nine days away. They were also a little sad that all the snow had melted on the weekend. Fortunately, the chance is that we will have snow on the ground again before Christmas. I know that from experience and from consulting NOAA’s probability of a white Christmas card.

NOAA’s probability of a white Christmas card is one of the many cards that NOAA offers in their public ERSI card gallery. The white Christmas card shows the chance that there will be snow in the continental United States on Christmas Day. The map is covered with small tiles that you can click to see what the chances are of a white Christmas at any location in the continental US. The map is based on historical snowfall data for each location on the map.

Applications for education
This card is just one of the dozens that you can find in the NOAA public card gallery. Many of the maps based on historical data can be good to refer to as studies in recognizing patterns.
