French Finance Minister: Pressure on energy causes an additional debt load of 12 billion euros

French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire warned of the impact of the energy crisis on the French over the coming winter, stressing that energy pressures have caused a €12bn increase in debt.

Le Maire indicated at a press conference on the occasion of the Aix-en-Provence economic meetings that the overall budget had been put on alert.

He said: “We are faced with a difficult choice, we cannot continue to warm up and move around as if nothing had happened,” French newspaper West France was quoted as saying on Sunday.

The French minister stressed the need for a “tariff shield” to control prices, explaining that “the French should pay a 30% surcharge on electricity and a 50% surcharge on gas.”
