G7: North Korea threatens regional and international security

Today, Sunday, the Group of Seven called on the United Nations Security Council to take action after North Korea fired an intercontinental missile.

“North Korea’s ballistic missile launch threatens regional and international security,” it said in a statement issued by the foreign ministers of the group which includes (Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Great Britain and the United States).

While the UN Security Council said yesterday, Saturday, that it will meet tomorrow, Monday, to discuss the situation.

The European Union has also called on the United Nations body to “respond appropriately” and condemned “a dangerous, illegal and irresponsible act”, as reported by “Agence France Presse”.

accompanied by his daughter

The North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un, supervised the launch of an ICBM, “Hwasong-17”, accompanied by his daughter, which he presented to the world for the first time, in a message published Saturday by the official North Korean news agency.

The news agency said the missile flew at a “maximum altitude of 6,040.9 km and covered a distance of 999.2 km” before “landing precisely in thearea predetermined” in the East Sea or the Sea of Japan.

Since Kim announced in September that North Korea has formally agreed on a policy that would make its nuclear status “irreversible,” Washington has stepped up cooperation in regional security matters, including by conducting joint military exercises, and is looking for ways to improve the protection it provides to Seoul and Tokyo.

Seoul and Washington, in in particular, they conducted the largest joint air exercises in their history in late October and early November.

In this context, the Joint Chiefs of South Korean staff said in a statement: “South Korea and the United States conducted a joint air exercise on Saturday with the US Air Force’s B-1B strategic bomber, which was redeployed to the Korean peninsula.”

But North Korea sees these displays of force as prove generals for an invasion of its territory or an attempt to overthrow the regime.

Among the most powerful weapons

The range and altitude estimates, provided by Seoul and Tokyo on Friday, are slightly lower than those of the ICBMs launched from Pyongyang on March 24 and appear to be the test most powerful North Korea has ever conducted.

North Korea said on March 24 that it had tested the Hwasong-17 – among Pyongyang’s most powerful weapons and dubbed the “monstrous missile” by military analysts – but Seoul has put in doubt tale statement.

Unprecedented series

In early November, Pyongyang launched an unprecedented series of test missiles, one of which landed near South Korean territorial waters.

November 2 alone saw the firing of 23 North Korean missiles, more than all missiles fired in 2017, as the North Korean leader and then-US President Donald Trump exchanged threats of a nuclear response.

In September and October, Pyongyang launched a barrage of missiles, one of which flew over Japan for the first time in five years.
