YouTube does not seem to get the rewind right.

Like Tumblr’s year-end fandom rankings or Spotify’s personalized playlists, YouTube completes the year with a summary of remarkable moments on the platform. Fittingly, this year’s “YouTube Rewind” begins with its own.

Last December, the YouTube Rewind 2018 was the most rejected video on YouTube. It has been labeled as too corporate by developers and fans, as brands and celebrities have been highlighted instead of the actual community of the platform. The video triggered 10 million dislikes in just eight days and became a notorious example of the discrepancy between YouTube, the business unit, and YouTube, a community of developers on the platform.

This year, the company apologized.

The inauguration of the Rewind 2019 is full of clips from YouTubers who have accumulated in last year’s video. The rest of the video returns to the simple top ten, highlighting creators, music videos, and other staples. However, the YouTube community is not happy.

At the time of writing, YouTube Rewind had 2.6 million acres in 2019, compared to 1.3 million likes. A quick scan of the comments shows much dissatisfaction along with copying and pasting similar comments (something that YouTube has blatantly reacted to in the pinned Commnet). In many comments it says that the video highlights more authors than last year, but does not contain them, but relies on existing clips. Elsewhere, it should be noted that the YouTube Rewind is now just a “thing”
