Activision Blizzard Makes Layoffs and Prepares for Changes in Overwatch League

Activision Blizzard recently laid off approximately 50 employees in its esports division, signaling potential significant changes for the Overwatch League.

In a surprising move, the affected team members revealed that the layoffs came without warning and without any opportunity for them to switch roles or teams.

Brad Crawford, senior director of global communications of Activision Blizzard esports, stated that the company remains committed to the future of esports and regularly evaluates its staffing to align with business goals and meet the needs of teams, players, and fans.

The layoffs coincide with uncertainties surrounding the future of the Overwatch League. Activision announced that franchise owners will vote on whether to continue the competition in its current format. If not, a termination fee of $6 million will be payable to each participating team entity.

Despite these changes, Overwatch League commissioner Sean Miller assured the community that the game remains committed to a competitive ecosystem and a revitalized global scene that prioritizes players and fans.

Moreover, Blizzard revealed plans to release a selection of its PC games on Steam, starting with Overwatch 2 next month.

On a separate note, Microsoft and Activision Blizzard have extended their merger agreement until October as they work towards regulatory approval for their $69 billion deal.
