It’s been four seasons now since Twitch streamer Asa began his Overwatch journey in bronze as a player. Yet somehow, in spite of his low position, he managed to reach GM, but how?

It’s not easy to climb the Overwatch leaderboards. After playing five placement games for your desired role, you will be placed on a skill rating ranging from bronze to master. To become a grandmaster, the players must win.

This grinding, on the other hand, can take quite some time. An SR of around 20 is earned for every dollar wagered, making it possible for a player with a 2,500 platinum rank to move up to a 3,500 master rank over many games.

Asa began with only 800 SR, but he worked his way up through the ranks to reach the 4,018-meter summit he is now standing atop.

Hardware limitations were a problem. “I used terrible hardware. A bad setup held me back, he said.

“Improving hardware has been a slow process, but it doesn’t define a player,” he said. “You can play at 60 FPS with a $10 mouse and be better than a pro.” From bronze to GM is impressive.

Asa’s best improvement method was playing in a team environment. “Coaching there shaped me as a player over the years.” Organized team play is a great way to improve.

From bronze to gold in two seasons, he struggled with platinum and diamond before becoming Masters and Grand Masters four seasons later.

The Canadian believes that those with low ELOs are no better than their teammates and deserve their rank.

“Many players at all levels have ego issues, including me. Only by knowing your level and working hard can you climb. Get better than your rank mates, and you win more games. The streamer said, “That’s it.”

Following Asa’s example of putting ego aside and focusing on oneself could help anyone in ELO hell. What’s your excuse?
