Contrary to the Internet prank, the Minecraft servers will not be shut down

Regardless of what the internet may or may not have told you, Minecraft won’t shut down its servers on December 21, 2020.

This amazing rumor appears to come from the Channel45news.com prank page, which has published a “story” picked up by a major search engine and advertised in its newsfeed along with legitimate outlets. For those of you who don’t know, Channel45news is a prank website that lets you create a headline of your choice. In this case, the headline read: “Minecraft will shutdown its servers in late 2020.”

Microsoft community manager Helen Zbihlyj tweeted Thursday to clear up the rumors. “Minecraft does NOT stop, Mojang does NOT close.” Polygon has also asked Microsoft for additional comments.

The prank appeared on December 30, when the “news story” was spread on Twitter. It is obvious that Channel45news is a prank website when you click the link – a banner on the side of the screen reads “You were prank!” at a glance. Thanks to this, the story quickly spread on social media.

Regardless of what this joke suggests, Minecraft remains one of the most popular and important games of the past 10 years, and it doesn’t seem to slow down as the game enters its next decade. New, important updates are often released, the last of which only happened a few weeks ago.
