Hyper Mega Tech’s Retro Revolution
Hyper Mega Tech, the brainchild of Blaze Entertainment—famous for the Evercade—continues to delight retro gaming enthusiasts. Their latest creations, the Neo Geo Super Pocket and the Data East Super Pocket, expand an already impressive lineup of handhelds that celebrate the golden age of gaming. The Neo Geo device boasts 14 iconic SNK games, while the Data East variant includes 18 beloved classics, making both options irresistible for nostalgia seekers.
A Fresh Take on Portability
Measuring approximately 4.5 inches and weighing just 166 grams, the Super Pocket series is designed with portability in mind. Its stylish design resembles the cherished Game Boy Colour, featuring four face buttons and four rear trigger buttons that, though lackluster, don’t detract significantly from the experience. The Data East model stands out with a vibrant light orange and blue color scheme, while the Neo Geo variant offers a throwback aesthetic inspired by the expensive AES console. Additionally, a limited edition flashy red variation of the Neo Geo is available for collectors.
At a wallet-friendly price of £49.99, the Super Pocket offers a budget alternative to the hefty price tag of the recently launched Nintendo Switch 2, which retails around £400. The Super Pocket’s affordability makes it the perfect companion for gaming on the go, ensuring you can enjoy classic titles during your daily commute.
Battery life is commendable, with around four hours for the Neo Geo unit and five for the Data East version, providing substantial playtime. However, gamers will need to keep a USB-C cable handy for recharging, as no plug is included; an inconvenience for those looking to game longer.
Modern features like save states enhance the experience, ensuring you can pick up right where you left off, especially in intense sessions of games like Metal Slug X. There’s also an easy mode option, making it more accessible and allowing players to finish challenging titles without burning through credits.
Game selection is another highlight. The Neo Geo Super Pocket excels with reliable titles, although it misses a few classics, like King of Fighters. Standout games include Shock Troopers, Sengoku 3, and Metal Slug X. While some players may find executing special moves on its smaller screen tricky, the nostalgia is undeniable.
The Data East Super Pocket may not match the Neo Geo’s consistency, but it includes a personal favorite: BurgerTime. This classic game is a delightful experience, letting players craft burgers while dodging enemies. Other enjoyable titles include Dark Seal, Joe and Mac, and Chain Reaction.
Moreover, a major draw is the ability to play all Evercade cartridges on these devices. Newer releases like Windjammers work seamlessly, given their arcade-style flair. However, the smaller 2.8-inch display might challenge visually intensive games and ones that require complex controls. The placement of back buttons can hinder gameplay for more button-heavy titles.
Despite a few minor drawbacks, the Neo Geo and Data East Super Pocket handhelds stand out as fantastic options for retro game lovers. The Neo Geo version demonstrates remarkable consistency, while the Data East variant is brimming with hidden gems just waiting to be discovered. Both devices are genuinely portable and reasonably priced, making them excellent choices as gifts, especially as the holiday season approaches.
