Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake: No Upgrade Path for Switch 2
Dragon Quest fans are in for a surprise: the highly anticipated Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake won’t be offering an upgrade option for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. In an official post on the Dragon Quest website, Square Enix has clarified that players looking to transition from the original Switch model to the new console will need to purchase the game again.
According to the announcement, the Nintendo Switch version and the Nintendo Switch 2 version are treated as entirely different releases. “There is no upgrade path currently available or planned. Please buy your copy for whichever system you would like to play it on,” they stated. This has sent shockwaves through the gaming community, with many fans expressing disappointment.
Interestingly, while both versions will feature the same content, their graphical fidelity will differ. This variance is due to each platform’s unique hardware capabilities, promising an exciting visual experience tailored for each console.
Save Data Won’t Transfer
Another major revelation is that save data from the original Nintendo Switch version won’t transfer to the Switch 2. Square Enix confirmed, “the Switch 2 version and the Switch version are treated as separate games, so save data cannot be transferred or shared between them.” This means players need to start fresh if they decide to jump to the new console.
Adding to the conversation is the implementation of the Game Key Card system, which will be used for Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake upon its release. This new format has sparked debates among fans, especially in Japan, as Nintendo assesses player feedback on this controversial change.
Mark your calendars: Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake hits shelves on October 30 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. Following the tremendous success of Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake last year, which sold over a million copies in Japan, expectations are high for the latest installment as fans eagerly await its launch.
