Fire Emblem is a fantastic series with a big problem: it’s hard to distinguish the characters.

With over a dozen entries, Fire Emblem is so productive that confusion prevails. The fact that Fire Emblem games are consistently in place exacerbates the situation, as each title requires a multitude of playable characters that can take the place of those who die in battle. The latest addition to Fire Emblem: Three Houses brings the entire number of playable characters on a stunning 596er.

PROTIP: If you see an anime guy in Smash Brothers whom you do not know, just call him “Jarth”.

Can you differentiate them all? Yes. Yes, of course it is. I say that in the title of this video.

It may not be possible to remember the details of each playable character, but each new Fire Emblem game contains characters that are similar to those of the previous entries. For this reason, we can begin to put characters together into archetypes.

With these archetypes you can focus on the broad swaths of Fire Emblem characters, the personality traits such as “has a sword and is moody” or “loves to flirt with anything that moves”. So you can distinguish them from each other. You may not know exactly what this Fire Emblem character is about, but you know the basics, and that’s good enough.
