Is a Final Fantasy 9 Remake Finally on the Way?

Final Fantasy 9 Celebrates 25 Years with Remake Rumors Heating Up

Square Enix has marked the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy 9 with a vibrant new video filled with iconic moments from the beloved PS1 RPG. This initiative is part of a series of celebratory events including stunning new artwork and exclusive merchandise for fans who adore this classic title.

Recent buzz surrounding this anniversary has sparked speculation that a remake of the game is within grasp. The anticipation isn’t entirely baseless; back in 2021, GeForce Now database leaks hinted at a Final Fantasy 9 remake among other unannounced titles. This list later proved to be accurate, featuring several other Square Enix treasures like the PC version of Final Fantasy 7 Remake and a remaster of Chrono Cross.

What We Know About the Remake Development

Although no official announcement for a Final Fantasy 9 remake has come to light, credible sources are pointing toward its active development. Notably, Naoki Yoshida from Square Enix suggested last year that remaking this title would be a monumental task. “When you think about all of that volume, I wonder if it’s possible to remake that as a single title,” he stated, emphasizing the game’s expansive content.

Earlier this year, reports surfaced claiming multiple Final Fantasy remakes are underway, including the much-discussed Final Fantasy 9. Originally released in 2000, the game was directed by Hiroyuki Ito, who would later take the helm for Final Fantasy 12. Its legacy includes re-releases as a PS1 Classic for the PS3 and PSP, with added support for the PS Vita in 2012.

As excitement builds, fans are left wondering: if this remake becomes a reality, what enhancements will Square Enix bring to such a rich and beloved experience?
