Is Warner Bros. Unfinished in the Live Service Game Arena?

Warner Bros. Games is making waves once again, as they are on the hunt for talent to develop a new live service game. This comes despite the recent setbacks with Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which faced a rough reception across the board.

Released last year, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was met with mixed reviews and significant fan backlash. The beloved creators behind the Batman Arkham series, Rocksteady Studios, grappled with a live service model that didn’t resonate well with players, resulting in disappointing sales and a dwindling player base.

Now, a job listing for an executive producer hints that Warner Bros. is not ready to give up on their ambitions for a DC Universe live service title. The role will involve overseeing the entire lifecycle of a AAA game, from its initial concept to the post-launch live operations.

What’s Next for Warner Bros. Games?

This new project arrives at a challenging moment for the publisher. Following a string of high-profile failures, including the recent departures within the company’s leadership, there’s no denying that the pressure is on. In February, David Haddad, the president of Warner Bros. Interactive, announced he was stepping away, leaving behind a division in turmoil.

Haddad’s exit marked a rough year for Warner Bros. Games, underscored by the mediocre launches of both Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and the ill-fated relaunch and subsequent closure of Multiversus. CEO David Zaslav didn’t hold back in addressing the state of gaming at the company, characterizing it as a “substantially underperforming” segment.

Despite these hurdles, hope remains on the horizon. Warner Bros. Discovery is eyeing a follow-up to 2023’s smash hit Hogwarts Legacy, which dominated the sales charts, beating out even heavyweights like The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
