Microsoft Layoffs Spark Controversy Over AI Advice

Microsoft’s recent layoffs have set off alarms, especially after comments from Xbox Game Studios producer Matt Turnbull. In a now-deleted LinkedIn post, he directed those impacted by the job cuts to consider using AI as a coping mechanism amid the turmoil.

Turnbull, known for his work on Crackdown 3 and State of Decay 2, suggested that AI tools like ChatGPT or Copilot could help alleviate the emotional strain of layoffs. His guidance came on the heels of a devastating announcement from Microsoft, which could see up to 9,000 employees let go.

Although his intentions may have been to provide support, the reaction was overwhelmingly critical. Turnbull emphasized that while these AI tools can help with “career planning” and “networking and outreach,” they can’t replace personal voice or experience. “When mental energy is scarce, these tools can help get you unstuck faster,” he argued, but the timing felt off to many.

The Backlash to AI Advice

The gaming community made their disapproval clear. Eric Smith, a producer from Zenimax Online, chastised Turnbull with a stark reply: “Jesus Christ, read the room dude.” Game designer Paul Murphy articulated what many felt, stating the respect due to laid-off employees was being overlooked. They’d previously been hired for their unique talents—a tribute to the human side of the gaming industry.

This uproar coincides with massive layoffs from Microsoft, leading to the cancellation of significant projects, including the much-anticipated reboot of Perfect Dark. The fallout also saw the closure of The Initiative and the cancellation of Rare’s Everwild, leaving a stamp of uncertainty on the studio landscape.

The Industry’s Unraveling

With these layoffs, several senior developers have exited iconic studios, and even ZeniMax Online Studios boss Matt Firor announced his departure during this chaotic shake-up. His studio also faced project cancellations, further adding to the distress within the community.
