Ransomware Group Admits Epic Games Hack Claim Was a Hoax

The ransomware group Mogilevich recently admitted that their claim of hacking Epic Games was a hoax. Last week, they posted on their darknet ‘leak’ site about a data breach of Fortnite and the Epic Games Store, alleging they had accessed email, passwords, payment information, and more totaling 189GB. However, unlike a previous hack on Insomniac Games, Mogilevich failed to provide any proof of their breach.

According to Cyber Daily, Mogilevich confessed that they didn’t actually have any of Epic Games’ data and were running a scam to sell fake ransomware infrastructure to other hackers. They claimed they weren’t selling illegally obtained data but were trying to deceive criminals into giving them money.

Group member Pongo stated, “This was done to illustrate the process of our scam. We don’t think of ourselves as hackers but rather as criminal geniuses, if you can call us that.”

It is still unclear what their true intentions were, but it is clear that Epic’s data was not compromised by Mogilevich.
