Netflix and video games

In recent years, Netflix has embarked on the development and publishing of video games. It all started with a game inspired by one of the platform’s flagship series: Stranger Things. Then the platform offered a number of mobile games before gradually welcoming popular titles such as Oxenfree, Immortality, Kentucky Route Zero or Spiritfarer. Recently, Netflix also welcomed long-awaited sequels like Oxenfree II: Lost Signals and Unknown Soldiers: Brothers In Arms (Netflix exclusive). Today, Netflix subscribers therefore have at their disposal, at no additional cost, a fairly interesting catalog of more than fifty video games. And it’s not over !

We are waiting for the arrival of other games on the SVOD platform. At the start of the year, Netflix reaffirmed its desire to expand its video game offerings. “This year, we are going to expand our catalog with several games each month” couldon thus read on the official website of the platform “we work with the world’s biggest studios to continue to bring our subscribers indie gems, award-winning hits, RPGs, interactive adventures, puzzle games and more.” Netflix also took this opportunity to recall that 16 games were in development internally and 70 by partner studios. If most of these projects are still unknown at the time of writing these lines, Netflix has not forgotten the players. The platform has just made a surprise announcement that is likely to delight more than one.

Your TV becomes a console games

Following the research of some data miners, on suspected that Netflix was planning to make available son catalog of games (hitherto reserved for the application mobile) on the televisions of its subscribers. It is now almost official since an application has made son appearance on the App Store. In the description of the latter, on can read “Coming soon to Netflix. Play games on your TV with the Netflix Game Controller”. No need to console games, so your television will do the trick. “What about the controller then?” you will tell me. Well, it will be… your smartphone. That’s what the app is for. Netflix Game Controller and you can already find an overview opposite.

Note however that if the latter is available, it is still only in version beta and therefore certainly not available to everyone. It is also not known if all the games in the Netflix catalog can be played thanks to the Netflix Game Controller. It could very well only concern games developed internally, for example. To find out more, we will have to wait for an official press release from Netflix. And on is already looking forward to learning more about this new tool which could finally encourage subscribers to take the plunge. They are indeed few to take advantage of the catalog of games on Netflix today (less than 1% of subscribers).
