Nintendo Switch 2 Breaks US Launch Records with 1.6 Million Sales

Nintendo Switch 2’s launch has completely rewritten the record books in the U.S. gaming scene. According to Circana data, this new console racked up an astonishing 1.6 million units sold in June alone, surpassing the PlayStation 4’s previous mark of 1.1 million at launch.

The surge in sales isn’t just a fluke; it propelled U.S. hardware spending to a jaw-dropping $978 million for June, representing a staggering 249% increase year-on-year. This marks the highest revenue ever reported for that month, eclipsing even the $608 million from June 2008.

The Games That Sold

With the Switch 2 taking center stage, the gaming community is buzzing. The best-selling game for June was none other than Elden Ring: Nightrein, followed closely by the PS5 exclusive Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. In a major twist, Mario Kart World secured third place, although its numbers don’t account for digital sales or bundled copies. It’s estimated that a whopping 82% of Nintendo Switch 2 buyers also snagged Mario Kart World.

Looking at third-party titles, gamers were quick to embrace Cyberpunk 2077, Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma, and Street Fighter 6, showcasing a diverse range of interests from the gaming community.

A Record-Breaking Start

Nintendo’s strategy for the Switch 2 appears to be paying off significantly. Within just four days of launching, it sold an impressive 3.5 million units globally, making it the fastest-selling Nintendo system ever. In comparison, the PlayStation 5 managed to ship 3.4 million units in its first four weeks, hampered by stock shortages that plagued its launch period.

This explosive start sets the stage for Nintendo to meet—and possibly exceed—their ambitious target of 15 million units in the first year, a goal that now seems increasingly achievable based on current trends.
