Nintendo Switch 2 Sets Record as Japan’s Fastest Selling Console

Nintendo Switch 2 Breaks Sales Records in Japan

The Nintendo Switch 2 is officially Japan’s fastest-selling console of all time, as confirmed by recent sales data. In just four days since its launch, the new system has moved an astonishing 947,931 units.

Famitsu’s hardware sales report for the week ending June 8 has revealed these impressive figures, although it’s important to note that this number doesn’t even account for sales from Nintendo’s official My Nintendo Store. If those figures were included, they would likely push the Switch 2’s debut total over the 1 million mark.

This stellar performance not only positions the Switch 2 as the most significant console launch in Japan’s history but also surpasses the previous record held by the PlayStation 2, which sold just over 630,000 units in its opening week.

The legacy continues with the Game Boy Advance at 611,000 units and the Nintendo DS at just over 468,000 units. Even the original Nintendo Switch lagged behind with only 330,637 units sold during its first week—nearly three times less than its successor has accomplished.

Game Launches and Impressive Attach Rates

The excitement doesn’t stop at hardware; five Switch 2 games dominated the top ten software chart in their launch week. Mario Kart World led the charge with a staggering 782,566 copies sold, giving it an incredible attach rate of over 82% (note: these figures exclude digital sales).

Other notable titles included Rune Factor (10,877 sales), The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (7,992), Breath of the Wild (7,529), and Yakuza 0 Director’s Cut (7,486), further illustrating the robust launch lineup.

On a broader scale, Nintendo announced that the Switch 2 sold 3.5 million units globally within its first four days, making it the fastest-selling Nintendo system ever and possibly the largest console launch to date. In comparison, the PlayStation 5 shipped (but didn’t necessarily sell) 3.4 million units in its first four weeks, grappling with stock shortages that affected its sales potential.

This explosive start sets Nintendo on a path to meet or even exceed its target of 15 million units in the first business year—a forecast that many analysts now believe is conservative.

Launched on June 5, the Switch 2 came together with heavy hitters like Mario Kart World, Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition.
