Development Kits for Nintendo’s Next Console Now with Key Partner Studios

Sources have revealed that development kits for Nintendo’s next console have been sent to key partner studios. The launch of the console is planned for next year, according to these sources.

Expected Launch in Second Half of 2024

Insiders familiar with Nintendo’s plans have suggested that the next-gen console will likely be released in the second half of 2024. This timeframe is chosen to ensure ample stock availability on launch day, avoiding the shortages experienced by PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

New Console Designed for Portable Gaming

Similar to the Nintendo Switch, the upcoming console will have portable gaming capabilities. Users will be able to play games on the go.

LCD Screen and Physical Game Compatibility

Two sources mentioned that the console may launch with an LCD screen instead of a premium OLED screen. This decision aims to reduce costs, considering the need for increased storage to accommodate higher fidelity games. The console will also support physical games through a cartridge slot, just like its predecessor.

Backwards Compatibility Support Uncertain

It is unclear whether the new console will offer backwards compatibility for both physical and digital games from the Nintendo Switch. Nintendo aims to transition its vast userbase to the next system, but some third-party publishers are concerned that supporting legacy Switch games could negatively impact the sales of next-gen titles.

An Ideal Time for a New Console

Industry consultant Dr Serkan Toto believes that a 2024 console launch would be advantageous for Nintendo, as its Switch hardware and software sales are projected to decline this year. Introducing a new device can help prevent these losses from significantly increasing in the next fiscal year.

Synchronizing with PlayStation and Xbox Launch Patterns

Christopher Dring, the head of games B2B at ReedPop, suggests that a 2024 release aligns with Nintendo’s historical trend of launching hardware mid-cycle compared to PlayStation and Xbox. He emphasizes that Nintendo needs to convince its casual fanbase with compelling offerings to ensure a successful launch.

Anticipating a Strong Launch Line-up

If Nintendo decides to release the successor to the Switch closer to Christmas, Dring predicts a more robust launch line-up compared to the initial Switch release. Multiple games would be ready for launch to drive sales during the crucial holiday period.

In May, Nikkei Asia reported that a source close to Nintendo claimed the development of the next console is progressing well. However, the source suggests that the product launch is not expected before the spring of the following year.
