Oculus Link is currently in beta. I needed a surprising amount of updates to plug in cables, reboot hard, and sacrifice goats to get things going. In the end, I’m not sure what I finally did – or what combination of things made the system finally work – but the end result was almost instant reverence.
Oculus Link does what it should: With Oculus Link, you can play Oculus Rift games from your PC with the standalone Quest headset connected to this PC via a single UBS C 3.0 cable. It’s as if Oculus had just decided to buy a “free” Rift-S for every quest worth $ 399.99.
Last week, I played a series of games using this method and used a 10-foot USB 3.0 cable from Oculus. However, in the official blog post, you’ll learn exactly what type of cable you need to buy. and what PC specifications you need to meet to play Rift games on your quest. It is not very expensive to get even a long USB stick. I would be surprised if you find it hard to find one at a price below $ 20.
But what is the actual experience of playing a game from my computer on a headset for which this is not intended? Well, my friends, I have some very good news.
Yes, that works as well as it should
Most people will not have both headsets to test, but switching between the Rift S and the quest when playing on my PC has shown that the quest with his bigger brother still can not quite keep up. The overall picture quality decreases slightly and a maximum of 72 frames per second are displayed, compared to the 80 frames per second available on the Rift S. The technical data do not lie, the quest is generally just a little less. capable headset when it comes to visualization.
The other side of this problem is that it does not matter. Games look better on a quest on a high-performance gaming PC than in stand-alone mode, making the quality reduction between Rift S and Quest less important. It’s simply not a standard that a consumer will use.
However, what you will see is that this option is inexpensive, hopefully soon to be easy to set up, and gives you much more search functionality and choice than what you would get from a Rift S. Oculus that was basically made by you the pillars of its product line redundant, and it is a power movement. Existing quest owners are probably excited – especially as you can play Half-Life: Alyx with a Quest over Oculus Link, as Valve has confirmed – while fans of the Rift S may be a bit grumpy. So it’s fine.
The cable sticks out of the headset at a sharp angle, but I still have no problem with that. Of course, your mileage can vary. polygon
I had fun playing with Oculus Link. There is some extra latency – Oculus has asked me to test some of the newer adventure games, but I’ve opted directly for action titles like Beat Saber and Space Pirate Trainer. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it slightly changed the feel of the game and did not make it playable or physically uncomfortable. My brain was able to handle the small change in response time and adjust accordingly. It only took a few minutes before I forgot it was there at all.
I will examine this idea in a future report, but this feature makes the Quest at this level of performance, while still in beta, basically the best value in VR, which is currently in the market next year , If you want to get into VR, now is the time.
Oculus has upgraded its standalone solution to one of the best connected headsets on the market for $ 399.99. Incredible.
