Dino Patti, co-founder of the acclaimed studio Playdead, finds himself at the center of a brewing legal storm. The studio, known for hits like Limbo and Inside, has announced plans to sue him over a LinkedIn post that allegedly spilled too many behind-the-scenes secrets.
Earlier this year, the drama began when Playdead’s lawyers suggested that Patti’s LinkedIn post included a “lengthy description†of the development process for Limbo, along with an unauthorized photo belonging to his former partner, Arnt Jensen. The studio has reportedly sought 500,000 DKK (about $77,000) in compensation. Fast forward to now, and Patti confirms that the lawsuit is set to move forward.
Behind The Curtain: A Tumultuous Relationship
Patti’s departure from Playdead wasn’t just business; it was personal. After co-founding the studio in 2006, their partnership birthed Limbo in 2010, followed by Inside in 2016. However, cracks in their friendship began to show a couple of years before Inside’s release. Patti exited the studio in 2017 to launch Jumpship, which debuted their game Somerville in 2022.
Interestingly, Patti claims that this lawsuit reflects Jensen’s intent to diminish his legacy within Playdead. Initially credited as an executive producer on the first page of Limbo, Patti’s name has since slipped down the list in later versions. In the Nintendo Switch edition, he appears on the third pageâ€â€a stark contrast that raises eyebrows.
The Legal Battle Unfolds
In a legal letter from Playdead’s lawyers, concerns were raised about Patti’s portrayal of his role during development. They warned that his disclosures could mislead the public into thinking he had a larger creative involvement than reality. As tensions rise, Patti hopes that the forthcoming trial will enable him to legally share his side without fear of repercussions, hinting that the public may finally get a glimpse into the inner workings of Playdead.
Patti expressed a sense of relief, stating that journalists could request access to all evidence gathered in the case. “I won’t hold anything back,†he said, indicating his intention to reveal whatever materials he can. As the gaming community anticipates the unfolding of this legal saga, the implications for Playdead and its reputation remain to be seen.
