Limited Run Games just unveiled a thrilling surprise for retro gamers: pre-orders for physical copies of Doom on the SNES are now live. This iconic title, originally crafted for the early 90s, is making a comeback that promises to ignite nostalgia while delivering brand-new features.
Leading the charge on this revival is none other than Randal Linden, a programmer who worked on the original game. For fans eager to relive the adrenaline-pumping action, a compatible SNES controller is also available. But don’t delay, as pre-orders will wrap up on August 8.
Limited Run isn’t holding back either; they’ve equipped this version with what they call “impossible graphics tricks” and features previously absent from the original. Enhanced gameplay includes circle-strafing abilities and the chilling prospect of monsters respawning on Nightmare difficulty. It’s a fresh take on a classic that gamers won’t want to miss.
Not Just a Cartridge
The standard edition comes packed with a 12 x 16 poster, a classic SNES-style box, and a well-crafted instruction manual. However, the real star is the collector’s edition, limited to just 666 copies, which features an individually numbered certificate of authenticity and a premium embossed foil box.
This excitement comes on the heels of prior controversies; earlier this year, Limited Run had to refute claims regarding the safety of its cartridges. Following that, issues arose surrounding potentially unsafe cartridges. Despite past missteps, the company remains determined to push forward with its innovative offerings, such as last year’s NES games like Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland and Piopow—both designed for original NES hardware.
To sweeten the deal for developers, Limited Run has committed to offering open-source support, allowing third-party updates to include rumble features with its new Rumble Tech SNES controller. This move could reinvigorate the modding community, creating an exciting landscape for both players and developers.
