Ransomware gang claims to hack Epic Games, threatens to leak data

A ransomware gang known as Mogilevich has claimed to have hacked Epic Games, revealing that they have nearly 200 gigabytes of internal data. The group posted a message on the darknet leak site detailing the alleged breach of Fortnite and the Epic Games Store.

The message states that they have successfully attacked Epic Games’ servers and have obtained a plethora of data including emails, passwords, full names, payment information, source code, and more totaling 189GB. The gang also mentioned that the data is up for sale, providing a link for interested parties such as employees of the company or potential buyers.

Mogilevich has set a deadline of March 4 for the data to be purchased, but has not disclosed a specific price or their intentions if the deadline passes. This group is relatively new and Epic Games is their fourth target, with Infiniti USA being their first victim the week prior.

As of now, there is no concrete evidence that the group has actually hacked Epic Games. In contrast, when the Rhysida group hacked Insomniac Games in late 2023, they released a small amount of data online as proof before proceeding to auction it off for 50 Bitcoins. Ultimately, they ended up releasing around 98% of the stolen data, leading to Insomniac expressing their distress over the incident.

It’s crucial for companies like Epic Games to swiftly address potential security breaches to safeguard their data and protect their reputation in the gaming industry.
