The booty boxes of the Rocket League have finally disappeared. The latest patch of the game removes the boxes that gave random loot to the players who paid for the unlock, and replaces them with blueprints that now give specific loot.
Developer Psyonix added Crates to the 2016 Rocket League, roughly at the height of the Loot Box Boom in games. Although this particular form of microtransactions has been declining in recent years, the post remained in the Rocket League. In August, however, Psyonix announced that it would remove Crates in favor of a system that would give players a better idea of the loot they were paying for.
Crates forced players to pay to unlock them and find out what was in them. The new blueprint system will provide players with this information in advance. Players can be randomly rewarded with blueprints at the end of a game. After receiving them, players can reveal what kind of blueprint they are creating, and then decide if they want to spend the money on crafting the item. If you uncover a blueprint and do not like what you find, you can trade it for another player.
All boxes that are in players’ inventory at the time of patch 1.7 will be converted to unpublished blueprints. In the meantime, unused keys that were previously used to unlock boxes become credits, the currency in which items are made from blueprints. Players can also exchange credits. So if you want to have a face-up blueprint that another player has, you can offer credits as compensation instead of swapping another blueprint.
The new patch will also include the game’s new Item Shop, which allows players to purchase certain items, including Esport cosmetics. The Rocket Pass 5, the game’s newest Battle Pass, is another cosmetic addition to the game in patch 1.7. The pass starts on December 4th and players can unlock a variety of cosmetics as they increase the level. Unlike previous passports, which gave keys for rewards at certain levels, Rocket Pass 5 now gives credits instead.
