On December 10th Shovel Knight Showdown and King of the cards will be available as a free update for owners of Paddle Knight: Treasury on Xbox One. We think these games offer something special, from a fast-paced multiplayer fighting game to a great single-player adventure. We can not wait to share it with you all.
The Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove package, consisting of five full games created over the course of five years, is finally done! We had some adventures with Xbox over the past five years – even the Battletoads visited the world of Shovel Knight. King of Cards and Showdown are really the cherries at the top and we hope you enjoy both!
Create a single player
Our desire for Shovel Knight was showdown on Xbox One
to create a big, stand-alone game with lots of variety to play
again and again. Part of this “full game” feeling had to come from Showdown
have your own adventure! It took a chance to go deeper in multiplayer mode
was not an option. The story and the characters had to take meaningful steps.
And if you had a partner nearby and still wanted an adventure . we
wanted you to play too! We have started to build our cornerstones
to develop a great story mode as well as other single player content.
Craft story mode
What is a story mode? Obviously, we wanted to give some sort of story, encourage you to play the game like all characters, and tempt you to play repeatedly. In addition, it would be ideal if you could see the full breadth of content in the game, so you would know exactly what’s available in multiplayer. But how could we show so much content in a fun and surprising way? This led us to brainstorm on how to combine a standard “fighting arcade ladder” with our random “Chester’s Choice” game mode.
Many fighting games like Mortal Kombat offer arcade ladders, but rarely interesting or unique setups. We like arcade ladders and think they work well, but with Shovel Knight Showdown so focused on gems and platform, we felt it was crucial to confuse platform gameplay.
We liked the approach to arcade ladders found in games like the Super Smash Bros Classic mode, which span a long series of levels, with each level presented as a fun encounter, in modes, settings, levels and characters are mixed along the way.
We decided to arrange our story mode randomly: battles, attitudes,
and modes are mixed, though they start from a handmade principle
set, like Chester’s Choice. That way we could make sure the fights were fun
Setups that highlight the story and characters while allowing for a repeat
Value.
While our Story Mode gameplay might include some stories
In terms of the scenarios you encountered, we knew that was not enough. Everyone
The story of the character had to be like a little episode! We will not go
in detail about how we designed the intertwined narratives in Shovel
Knight Showdown – this is a story for another day! But as soon as we were done, we
had many action points that we wanted to convey!
First, we gave each character an intro and outro cutscene
Use graphics in the game. These scenes would build up the story and pay off
the end. The Outro Cinematic would also serve as a reward for completing the story
for this character.
We have made every effort to ensure that each character has one
rewarding story. During the story fights themselves, each character was
assigned a unique rival or impact that you would encounter several times.
These striking figures were selected by hand for each figure to try to make them
most interesting story possible. Through the cutscenes and rival encounters,
Every adventure has its own little story arc. Best of all, when you played history
Mode like any of the unlockable characters, the story would be completely intertwined
get clear. Taken together, these stories made Showdown feel
like a big adventure that deserves its own title.
But there is more Two
Players can play the story cooperatively! Because showdown is
First and foremost a multiplayer experience, we wanted to have the singleplayer content
the opportunity to be played with a friend. Sometimes you want a change
Before the fight against each other and cooperative story mode is a great alternative! The
Battles can be very different in single player or co-op mode – we hope you try them out
both!
The story mode is full of special events, clear rules
Sets, boss fights and finally a cool new mini-game: the target mode we will have
discuss next.
target mode
In addition to story mode, we considered it important (and funny!) To have a mode in which players can practice the characters in a different, non-threatening environment. A goal or rating mode seemed to fit well.
We like how target modes in games like Super Smash Bros. can encourage players to take advantage of the full breadth and depth of each character’s moves, leading to new insights into how their abilities are performed. But Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove already has hundreds of single player challenges and levels to offer. We also wanted our target mode to train the player indefinitely.
We felt that a classic arcade-style score attack was enough
the trick. We put the goals on random paths that were interesting
Navigation challenges and we would group them together to test your attack ranges.
The idea is simple enough: Break off the goals that lie on the track on points! If you break a group of goals in a row, a “chain” completion bonus and two additional seconds of play time will be added. As soon as you have no time left, the game ends! That way, the game could possibly last forever.
If the target mode took a different amount of time, we had to make sure that the gameplay did not feel static. Like one of our favorite single-screen attack games, Bird and Beans, we’ve focused on dynamic elements. In Birds and Beans, during the game, the ground is destroyed and you have to play differently! In our target mode, the stage changes layout, a dangerous bomb (or a helpful smart bomb!) Can appear, and even the Emcee Percy will engage in various antics. We have increased all these behaviors to a crescendo!
Goals can get wild as the score increases. The goals
Move faster, there are new types of targets and the ground can fall off

Although we could add modes forever, we did not want to overload

All mode d Out!
From single player to multiplayer, there are a variety of ways to play Shovel Knight Showdown. All in all, we’ve learned that creating content in a multiplayer game is only half the battle! It has to be presented in a variety of modes that best showcase it.
We think showdown and its different modes are great
play! The game should be easy to learn and understand, but there are plenty
to explore and master with each mode. We hope you enjoy playing and repeating
