Sony Expects Cloud Gaming to Grow by 2025
The CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE), Jim Ryan, has stated that cloud gaming will not become a major part of the company’s business until at least 2025. This statement came as part of Microsoft’s court battle with the US Federal Trade Commission regarding its acquisition of Activision Blizzard for $69 billion.
In April, the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority blocked the deal, citing concerns about the impact on the cloud gaming market. Microsoft has since made distribution agreements with cloud gaming providers to address these concerns.
During a video deposition shown in court, Ryan was asked about the future of cloud gaming. He responded by saying that between 2025 and 2035, cloud technology will become a meaningful component of how gamers access games. However, he admitted that it was difficult to provide a more specific timeline.
Sony has recently started testing cloud streaming for PS5 games and plans to offer this feature to PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers. In addition, Ryan has mentioned that the company has aggressive plans to accelerate its cloud initiatives in the coming months.
Despite the potential of cloud-based gaming, Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida has acknowledged that there are technical challenges that need to be addressed. Nevertheless, the company is determined to tackle these challenges and seize the opportunities presented by cloud technology.
