Sony has secured the entire Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy as a console exclusive, confirmed by a recent report from The Washington Post. This means that for now, Xbox players will have to sit this one out.
The first game in the trilogy, Final Fantasy 7 Remake, originally launched for the PS4 in April 2020. A fancy upgraded version, Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade, made its way to the PS5 in June 2021, followed by a PC release six months later.
The latest installment, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, just dropped for the PS5 and will remain exclusive to Sony’s console for at least three months. PC players might not have to wait too long before they can get their hands on it though.
According to Vice President Christian Svensson from Sony Interactive Entertainment, the decision to make Final Fantasy 7 a console exclusive was a mutual desire from both Sony and Square Enix. They’ve been collaborating on this project since the original PlayStation days.
The team at Square Enix emphasized how having the game exclusively on one platform allowed them to create a seamless world map and push game design boundaries.
While there’s no news yet on Final Fantasy 7 Remake or Final Fantasy 16 coming to Xbox, there is hope with the recent announcement that Final Fantasy 14 will finally arrive on Xbox consoles in 2024 after being exclusive to PlayStation for so long. Xbox boss Phil Spencer expressed how important it is for them to team up with Japanese publishers like Square Enix.
