Nintendo has its big Ver. 2.0.0 Update for Super Mario Maker 2. While many expected a new stage theme to be created, Nintendo surprised players with new elements, a new speedrun mode and an unexpected new playable character from one of the other Nintendo flagships.
The biggest change with the new update is the Master Sword Power-Up, which adds a link from the Legend of Zelda series as a playable character. Instead of doing a cosmetic transformation as in the first Super Mario Maker Mystery Mushroom, Master Sword transforms Mario and his friends into Link with his arsenal. Link can attack enemies with his sword, blow up obstacles with a bomb, aim and shoot with his bow, and even fend off items with his shield. Unfortunately, Link, similar to the Mystery Mushroom costumes in the first game, is exclusive to Super Mario Bros. 1.
For more traditional experiences with Super Mario Maker, Ver. 2.0.0 also adds several stage elements to the stage creation suite. The update adds frozen coins that can be thawed with various fire elements, and a P-block that can be made invisible or visible by pressing the P-switch. Spike, the Spike-Ball-Throw-Enemy, and Pokey, the Walking Cactus, also join the Evilies Library to add something to the stages. Finally, those who create in the Super Mario 3D World theme can use new dash blocks to give players a sudden burst of speed.
The latest addition to this update is Ninji Speedruns, which gives players online timed challenge courses. These levels are created by Nintendo and show the runs of other players in addition to their playing through in the form of Ninji Ghosts. The goal of the mode is for players to see other players approach levels, learn from their ghosts, and improve their own performance. When you complete these courses, you will receive stamps that can be redeemed for Mii Costumes in the game. Each Ninji Speedrun event lasts about a week, with new courses being introduced as the mode continues to live. Even if a course is withdrawn from the event, players can continue to play it along with the Ninji Ghosts. While Ninji celebrated her serial debut in Super Mario Bros. 2, there is no further evidence that anything else comes out of this popular game in Super Mario Maker 2.
You can see all these new elements and features in action in the following official trailer.
The Ver. The 2.0.0 update is available free to all players from the 5th of December.
