After almost two years late, The New Mutants finally has a new trailer. The latest in the X-Men universe focuses on five young mutants trapped in an isolated hospital to learn more about their powers. As they try to escape the facility, they discover their terrible secrets.
The new trailer focuses on Danielle Mooonstar (played by Blu Hunt), a powerful psychic mutant who can turn people’s worst nightmares into reality, and the newest resident of a mysterious psychiatric clinic. She meets some of the other patients, including Rahne Sinclair, a girl who can turn into a wolf, played by Game of Thrones’ Maisie Williams, Magik’s Illyana Rasputin, played by Anya-Taylor Joy (The VVitch, Split) and Sam Guthrie, played by Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things).
After their brief introduction, we find that the place where they are kept is not really a hospital, but a cage. From there, hell breaks loose as the trailer quickly moves from characters trapped in medical beds to battles with their own terrible and uncontrolled powers.
The New Mutants is said to follow the Demon Bear saga from the New Mutants X-Men comic, which appears briefly at the end of the trailer. Since its beginnings in the 1980s, the New Mutants comic has always been a little stranger and better suited to horror stories than to the traditional exploits of the X-Men. In line with this idea, The New Mutants will be the first X-Men movie to focus more on horror than action, and the trailer parade of haunted hospital anxiety is sure to make this clear.
The New Mutants was originally filmed in 2017 and then subjected to countless new releases and delays. While there have been reports that these should mitigate the most terrifying parts of the film, it is unclear whether the version released later this year is the more frightening original version or a later, slightly weakened version. One thing we know thanks to director Josh Boone (The Mistake in Our Stars) is that the film is rated PG-13, which was always part of the plan.
According to the trailer, The New Mutants is set to hit theaters on April 3. Hopefully it will come out this time.
