The Nintendo Switch Achieves Record June Sales in Japan

According to Nikkei (via Stealth40k on Twitter), the Nintendo Switch has achieved its highest June sales in Japan. In June, the system sold 380,000 units, which is a 68% increase compared to June 2022.

The Nintendo Switch is currently in its sixth year and is on track to sell 30 million units in Japan by the end of this year. Despite speculations about the system reaching the end of its life, the release of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom in May significantly boosted its sales.

In addition, a Nintendo Direct in June revealed several new Mario titles for the Nintendo Switch, potentially contributing to the increased sales. However, the substantial year-on-year growth suggests that the sales boost goes beyond the traditional post-Direct impact.

If the Nintendo Switch continues its success, it is expected to surpass the Game Boy and the Nintendo DS in sales next year, becoming the most successful console of all time in the region. However, to outrank the Nintendo DS and PlayStation 2 in worldwide sales (both estimated around 155 million), the Nintendo Switch will need to sell approximately 30 million more units globally.

Although Nintendo reported a slowdown in Switch console sales in May, it stated that no new hardware would be released before April 2024. According to an anonymous source close to Nintendo, the development of the company’s next console seems to be progressing well, but a product launch is unlikely before next spring at the earliest.

Nintendo aims to sell 15 million Switch consoles this fiscal year, which represents a 16.5% decline compared to the previous year. Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa acknowledged the challenge of sustaining sales momentum in the Switch’s seventh year but expressed determination to bolster demand during the holiday season.

Furukawa also hinted at a different approach for announcing a new console, suggesting that Nintendo would reveal it closer to the product’s launch compared to the early announcement of the Switch. The development of the current-gen console was originally announced as the ‘NX’ in March 2015, two years before its eventual release.
