Top Gun: Maverick trailer: Tom Cruise's sequel consists entirely of wild plane stunts

34 years after the release of Top Gun, Maverick returns to the cockpit. This time, however, Tom Cruise has a pilot’s license.

After many talks and false starts, Top Gun 2 aka Top Gun: Maverick will be released in the cinemas in summer 2020. For cinema-goers of a certain generation, the event film with Star Wars: Episode VII is up there; Just like the space opera by George Lucas and Steven Spielberg’s Jaws, director Tony Scott and producer Jerry Bruckheimers 1986 air pilot revolutionized the blockbuster cinema and grossed over $ 350 million worldwide.

Cruise’s career has changed dramatically since the actor’s first mega hit. These days, Mission: Impossible’s star hangs on a helicopter harness, while superhero films displace most of the action-driven spectacle. Lean back for Top Gun: Maverick was an inevitable development – but in the hands of Oblivion filmmaker Joseph Kosinski, the sequel seems to improve the hair-raising aerial view from the first film and bring something new to the screens. It helps if your leading man can actually fly the damn plane.

The actual trailer is slim. Maverick is back and training a new group of recruits on how to go to heaven. Newcomers Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm and Glen Powell all appear, but at the end of the day this is the cruise show, and it’s better that way. Only a star of a certain caliber can break through the sound barrier and form this face without us attacking it.

Top Gun: Maverick will hit theaters on June 26, 2020 in both traditional and IMAX formats.
