Our first real look at Marvel’s Black Widow – at least outside Hall H at the San Diego Comic-Con – came on Tuesday in the first trailer of the film. In addition to Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff, the two-minute teaser gives MCU fans a glimpse of David Harbor (Stranger Things, Hellboy) in costumes as Russian superhero Red Guardian.
Harbor’s signature red-gray suit is crisp yet powerful, which is the rare but memorable combination of a classic full-beard superhero hood. We got our first look at this look during the San Diego Comic-Con 2019 on the first Black Widow poster.
So, who is David Harbour’s Red Guardian?
Harbor plays Alexei Shostakov, a Soviet agent chosen to match Captain America. But since Dr. Erskine had died without giving away his super-soldier formula, but had to settle for intensive training and advanced weapons. In the comics, the Red Guard and the Black Widow share more than one country of origin – they were also married for a while.
But it does not seem that Harbor and Scarlett Johansson’s characters share that kind of connection in Black Widow – scenes in the teaser seem to show how Natasha, Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova and Rachel Weisz’s Melina Red Guardian break out of prison. “Family,” he tells the three, after putting on his costume, “together again.”
We will find out when the movie will be released on May 1, 2020.
