Geoffrey Pohanka’s Plans for NADA Chairmanship: Data-Sharing, Franchises, and Beyond, and more

Geoffrey Pohanka steps into the role of NADA chairman at the NADA Show in Dallas at the end of January. Last fall, the National Automobile Dealers Association published its “guiding principles” for rapidly developing issues that auto manufacturers and their dealer networks will face as vehicles transform into computers on wheels. Pohanka, who is the chairman of Pohanka Automotive Group, was the driving force behind the mission statement. He is well-versed in the changes swirling around the industry and has identified key issues that need to be addressed, such as data-sharing, over-the-air updates, the transition to electric vehicles, and staying competitive so direct sellers don’t take away business.

In an interview with Automotive News, Pohanka discussed how he has prepared for his role as NADA chairman, his top initiatives, and the issues surrounding data-sharing, over-the-air updates, and the agency model. Pohanka believes that data-sharing agreements should be fair and balanced and that dealers should be encouraged to sell subscription and accessory products. He also believes that manufacturers will not be able to go all-electric despite what they say due to cost and the lack of charging infrastructure.

As for the transition to electric vehicles, Pohanka recommends that dealers take an EV and drive it thousands of miles to understand the customer experience. He believes that dealers should not be afraid to invest in EVs as there is demand for them and they will be a part of the business in many states. He also believes that it is important to have the right amount of utility and charging infrastructure in place when selling EVs.

In terms of inventory, Pohanka believes that a 45-day supply works best for the industry, but that small dealers may need more to have enough selection. He believes that manufacturers will stay disciplined, but they may be tempted to increase their inventories to gain market share.

Overall, Pohanka believes that it is important for NADA to stay ahead of issues and be proactive in addressing them. He has provided insight into the rapidly developing issues that auto manufacturers and their dealer networks will face and has identified key initiatives that need to be addressed. By addressing these issues and staying ahead of them, NADA will be able to ensure that the franchise model is protected and that dealers are able to remain competitive and successful.
