German Ambassador in China dies less than two weeks after finding his job

The German Ambassador in China Jan Hecker passed away suddenly less than two weeks after taking up the job in Beijing.

the 54-year-old death was confirmed by the German Foreign Ministry on Monday.

hecker, who was a former foreign policy Chancellor Angela Merkel’s adviser, began his posting on 24 Aug.

Hecker had arrived in Beijing on 1 Aug. with his wife and three children, according to the German outlet Deutsche Welle.

The details around are death have not yet been announced.

The German minister of Foreign Affairs Heiko Maas said there was no indication that Hacker’s death was linked to his diplomatic role.

“I think with gratitude of U.S work together and am happy so close met to have been connected to him for year. My deepest sympathy goes out out to his wife, his children and his other loved ones in their immeasurable sorrow.”

Hecker had been Merkel’s foreigner policy advisor since 2017 and was director at the time of the Department of Foreign policy, security and development policy.

He was the 14th German ambassador in China.
