German Publisher Daedalic Entertainment Ends Internal Development After Troubled Launch of Lord of the Rings: Gollum
German Publisher Daedalic Entertainment Ends Internal Development
German publisher Daedalic Entertainment recently announced that it will be discontinuing all internal development projects. This decision comes after the troubled launch of their latest title, Lord of the Rings: Gollum.
Going forward, Daedalic Entertainment will shift its focus to publishing, licensing, sales, and marketing. This marks a difficult turning point for the company, but also signifies a new beginning in its long history.
According to a statement made to gameswirtschaft.de, the publisher confirmed that approximately 25 employees will be affected by this decision. However, Daedalic Entertainment is committed to supporting these individuals in finding new opportunities within their network.
Troubled Launch for Lord of the Rings: Gollum
Lord of the Rings: Gollum, developed in collaboration with co-publishers Nacon and Daedalic, faced multiple delays before its release in May. Unfortunately, the game received negative reviews from both players and critics.
In fact, it is currently the lowest rated game of the year on popular aggregation sites such as Metacritic and OpenCritic. The Guardian described it as “a derivative, uninteresting and fundamentally broken stealth action adventure that fails to capture anything interesting about Tolkien’s fiction.”
Daedalic Entertainment swiftly apologized for the underwhelming experience and expressed deep regret that the game did not meet expectations. The company has promised to improve the game through future updates.
