After Ghostbusters: Afterlife brought the series back to life two years ago, everyone’s favorite ghost hunters and the rest of the Spengler family are coming back with a brand-new fifth movie called Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.
Following the trend of “requels” and legacy sequels, Sony chose to make Ghostbusters: Afterlife as a more straight follow-up to Ghostbusters II. The official third film in the main Ghostbusters series, directed by Ivan Reitman’s son Jason Reitman, has been generally praised as the best sequel in the series. Fans and critics alike loved the characters, both new and old, and said the movie was a touching tribute to the late Harold Ramis. No one in the crowd had any doubts after seeing Egon’s grandchildren and the rest of the Ghostbusters beat Gozer (Olivia Wilde) a second time. They wanted to know where they would next appear. This is the answer: Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, which will pick up the story where Ghostbusters: Afterlife left off. Take a look at what we know so far about Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire to learn more about the movie’s new director, returned cast, release date, and more.

What is the Release Date of Ghostbusters?
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire was supposed to come out in theaters on December 20, 2023. Sony Pictures said early in August 2023 that the movie would not come out until March 29, 2024, which is Easter weekend. This was because of the SAG-AFTRA Strikes. The sci-fi movie Mickey 17, which stars Robert Pattinson, is also coming out on the same day. It is the much-anticipated follow-up to Parasite by Bong Joon-ho, who won an Academy Award.
What Is the Plot of ‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Kingdom’?
The story of Ghostbusters: Frozen Kingdom will take place in the summer in New York, where the games were first made. This is what the official summary from Sony says:
In Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, the Spengler family returns to where it all started – the iconic New York City firehouse – to team up with the original Ghostbusters, who’ve developed a top-secret research lab to take busting ghosts to the next level. But when the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, Ghostbusters new and old must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second Ice Age.
It makes sense that the next bad guys in the series could be old friends, like when Gozer and her troops came back in Ghostbusters: Afterlife.
Is There a Trailer for ‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Kingdom’?
Sony Pictures put out the first creepy video for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire on November 8. To start, the trailer plays the classic Bananarama song “Cruel Summer,” and then it switches to a score that sounds like it came from the original movies. In it, the “Death Chill,” an icy supernatural force that turns New York into a second ice age, interrupts summertime.
Who Is Making ‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’?
The movie Ghostbusters: Afterlife was directed by James Reitman, who took over from his father Ivan Reitman. In this case, though, Reitman will not be directing. Instead, Gil Kenan, who directed Monster House and has a lot of experience with “kids fighting monsters,” will take over. Reitman won’t be leaving for long, though, because he’s still agreed to co-write and co-produce the movie with Kenan. Two people who worked on the original Afterlife movie are also working on this one: co-producer Jason Blumenfeld (Tully) and photographer Eric Steelberg (Juno).
